INTERNET ADDICTION
Nowadays, the Internet use is widespread around the world. Not only adults but also children
teenagers and even babies are addicted. However, what are the effects of this addiction? As you
see, it has negative effects as every addiction: first the emotions or feelings of the addicted, sleep
deprivation, and the social isolation that Internet creates.
First of all, internet addicts spend most of their time in a virtual world, away from the real world and
they live in a fantasy universe that is unreal. After a period of time, they become dependent on this
virtual space, so dependent on Internet. If they cannot access it, they generally start to feel
symptoms of anxiety, sadness and depression. Moreover, an addicted can experience mood
changes. Some of them use Internet to reduce their stress and boost their mood. They start to feel
happy or euphoric when they are connected.(Carson-DeWitt) However, if they are unable to get
access, they might become gloomy or angry. In addition to that, an idea of lying appears; when
addicts understand that they have a problem but when they are confronted or questioned by their
family members for example, they try to conceal their habit and they are dishonest about the time
they spend on the Internet.
Secondly, Internet addiction leads to sleep deprivation. The addicts spend lots of hours connected,
(Carson-DeWitt), that sometimes they prefer being connected than sleeping. This makes them more
tired for the next day. Lots of teenagers are addicted to internet games that do not let them sleep the
hours they need; that do not allow them to have good grades at school or even they feel depressed
because they are very tired. (Mazzola)

Thirdly, addicts experience social isolation. Those who spend a lot of time surfing on Internet tend to
become a part of one or several online communities. They end up developing close friendships or
intimate relationships with several people. They spend lots of hours connected in order to remain
close with them. These relationships are usually only virtual relationships because they do
not know each other in real life, only through the computer. Owing to such behaviour, Internet
addicts often end up isolating themselves not only from the society but also from their families and
peers.(Carson-DeWitt) Their real friends only exist in their “fantastic world” not in the real world.
In conclusion, Internet addiction is a real scourge today with the effects of isolation, sleep deprivation
and changing of behaviour. This addiction must be treated as a disease of recent appearance. I
consider that if an addict gets help, he or she can regain the main characteristics of humans and
enjoy friendship and family relationships and in this way overcome this addiction.
