Internet Addiction: Effects of Internet Addiction

Did you know that 50 percent of the teenagers actually admitted that they are addicted to internet ? Even some of the parents said that they are addicted to internet (Joyce). Internet addiction affects teenagers and adults life severely. Some of the effects are teenagers having bad school performance, bad family relationships, and less communication with friends.

Internet affects school performance because most of the teens who are addicted to internet usually text and use social media a lot more than studying. And most of them don’t get enough sleep because of late night texting which affects their grades at school (Mazzola). Most of the students these days sleep in their class or text or surf on Instagram, Facebook, etc. in the middle of the class instead of listening to the lesson and so they have to study a lot at home to learn those things that they should’ve learned in class. Even though they need to study at home they also use that time to use social media or text with their friends.

Next,  Because of internet addiction, the interactions between kids and parents keep getting fewer. With technology blending into our lives in ways that we never could have imagined just a decade ago, it’s tricky to decide what’s okay and what is just the way we live now. And people are now having problems finding a stable balance between parents and their kids. Some teenagers do not interact with their parents because of their addiction to online gaming or social media. Like when a family is having time together instead of having conversation together they look at their devices. This is one of the worst effects of internet addiction because just because their addiction to internet they shouldn’t isolate themselves from each other.

The last effect of internet addiction is the relationship between friends. So many teenagers use their cell phones to communicate with each other instead of meeting face to face like old times. And because they can communicate with each other through internet they don’t need to meet each other in real life. Some of the teens meet each other to go have fun together; however they mostly use their phones even when they are supposed to have conversations and fun together. Especially there are some teens who don’t  want to interact with their friends just because they want to stay at home and play video games, etc.

In conclusion, these factors isolate us from the real world, especially the teenagers of next generation. Instead of continuing like this, we need to change and stop this internet addiction so we can stop the isolation of virtual world and socialize in real life.
