Negative Effects Of Internet Addiction on Teenagers

Do you know that 88% of teens have access to a smartphone? (Lenhart) According to a new report by Common Sense Media, 52% of teens said they agree that they spend too much time on their mobile devices. (Joyce) The number of people who feel addicted to the internet is increasing everyday and especially the teenagers aren’t aware of the negative effects of the internet addiction. Some of the main negative effects of the internet addiction on teens are bad grades at school, lack of sleep and having difficulties in face-to-face conversations.

One of the most common effects of the internet addiction on teenagers is getting bad grades at school. Most of the students are watching television or texting while doing homework and it causes them to multitask. According to a study by the University of Sussex, multitasking reduces our brain’s efficiency and even affects our IQ score. (Bradberry) There are also some teenagers that cannot stop using their phones and miss the deadlines of the assignments. A new study from Seton Hall University indicated that 61% of the teenagers feel their usage of internet impacted their schoolwork. (Mazzola)

The second negative effect of the internet addiction is the lack of sleep. According to a new study, 55% of teenagers reported texting and using the digital platforms for at least an hour a night before bed and nearly 85 percent of teenagers sleep with their phones on or near their beds. (Mazzola) The usage of the internet during the bedtime affects teenagers not only in the quantity and quality of their sleep but also the level of alertness during the day. In addition, the researchers suggested that the smartphone lights stops the production of melatonin in brain which promotes sleep. (Mazzola)

The third negative effect of the internet addiction is difficulties in communicating with others face-to-face. Nowadays, most of the teenagers surf on the internet instead of spending time with their friends or family. 77% of teens get distracted by devices and don’t pay attention when they are together. (Joyce) Studies also showed that the internet addiction makes it difficult to have face-to-face conversations and learn to be empathetic. (Joyce)

We are living in the age of technology and the internet addiction is one of the biggest threats we are facing today. Therefore, we need to be aware of its negative effects and take the action to enjoy the real world with our family and friends.
